Software to recover hard drive data?
I'm looking for something that can read the ones and zeros of a hard drive that suddenly unallocated itself and says it requires reformatting. I haven't touched any of the data on it, so it should all still be there. A friend of mine told me about some specific software that you boot into that does this, but I forgot the name before I had a chance to try it and can't get in touch with him ...so if that sounds like something familiar.Also, the data on here isn't really life or death. Just something I'd like to get back if I could, so I'd rather not go out and buy some super FBI stuff if that's what it comes to. Thanks.Unfortunately this drive is SATA only, so as far as I know can't even try the Master Slave idea. I was kinda hoping it would be simply, but as long as its not unnecessarily hard I can probably still figure it out...the most I can do is lose lost data.

I used a program called testdisk and could view the files. Then when I went back and ran it again, I could only view one specific folder. I really need the data does anyone know why testdisk only shows me one folder now?

How to recover hard drive data when windows xp will not boot?
My computer was set to automatic updates from Windows, and when it last updated and prompted me to restart, upon restart the computer would not complete POST. It gets to the Windows xp page, but then goes to the page with safe boot options. No matter which option I choose, including Last known good configuration, it will not complete post and returns back to the safe mode boot page in an endless loop. I just want to know how I can fix this or if I have to reformat, I need to know how to recover my data from My Documents w o losing it.

I have a win vista laptop that cannot boot properly anymore. I would like to recover the data from the laptop hard drive. My current plan is to take out that SATA hard drive and plug it into my win xp desktop computer so I can transfer files from that laptop hard drive to the computer. I already have an IDE SATA adapter so that's not a problem. The problem is, my hard drive is not being recognized by the desktop computer. Since I'm a noob when it comes down to computer hardware, what am I doing wrong? Could someone post instructions? Would this process even work? Or could someone offer me alternate, but inexpensive data recovery methods, or perhaps easier ways? Thanks.

ok i formatted my hard drive hoping to revoer old files but something got copied on to that hardive it was a small file is their anyhope to see my old files?
