Will a data recovery specialist report me to the government if I have pirated stuff on my HDD?
So recently, my hard drive failed me. I was told to go to a data recovery specialist. People told me I should go to professionals, however, I'm afraid of them reporting me to the government about things on my computer. I wouldn't be really worried, but the government is stepping up on pirating and stuff now. I don't want to lose the stuff I have on my hard drive because I have a project I've been working on for 2 months.Link me to some good data recovery specialists?

Inaccessible external hard drive, is data recovery possible?
Here's my problem. My external USB drive has for some reason stopped working and now I can t access the data on it on any computer. I'm afraid I can't elaborate about what kind of a drive it is, a friend having whimsically given it to me when he didn't need it anymore. It has no text on it either.Vista doesn't recognize the drive in any way, nothing happens when I plug it in. I have some data on it that I'd dearly like to salvage before trying to reformat or tossing it away. I checked it through Computer Management > Disk Management, and all I can see is that I've got a removable drive plugged in but there s no way to access my data. The only thing I can try is to reformat. Is there any hope of salvaging my data without being able to access the drive? Any freeware that might be up to this seemingly insurmountable task? I can always buy another external drive but I'd be really bummed to lose the data.Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated EDIT In response to blacksmith yes, it's been working without problems until a few weeks ago. But no, I've been using it as is without any modifications to the length of the cable. Regardless, thank you, that's definitely very useful to know for future purchases.EDIT EDIT Many thanks for taking the time to reply, Jim. I've tried different usb ports and different pcs altogether to no avail. I guess I don't qualify as a techie but I'm not entirely hopeless with pc hardware either. I believe I might manage the IDE or SATA thing, think I've even got a cable lying about somewhere. I'm worried the drive is too screwed up to get my files back but I'll lose nothing by trying. Thanks a lot for the advice

Data recovery after accidentally deleting the contents of a folder with Goodsync on PC?
Hi everyoneI have a question related to a monumental error I made today. I use a Windows 7 Ultimate desktop PC.I had been syncing data between an external HDD and my desktop PC, using Goodsync Enterprize. Using Goodsync, I made a backup of one folder on the external, onto a different folder that already had data in it, on the desktop. I thought it would add the files to the directory I was backing up, but instead it backed up the data from the external and DELETED the data originally residing on the folder on the desktop. This was not my plan at all, I thought it would simply add these backed up files to the files already in there. The contents of that folder which were delted are utterly invaluable to me and to lose that data is a real tangible loss. Here are the options I am aware of.1. I have a backup image of the hard drive which was taken before the files were deleted. I'd like to retrieve them from that but would rather not revert the entire hard drive image back since there have been a great many changes since then . The back up image is only 5gb in size though and was made from the 'backup and restrore' options in windows 7 ultimate would it be possible to retrieve them through that?2. I am aware of software that can retrieve deleted files. From my limited understanding of crytopgraphy and hard drive stuff, that provided the hard drive has not been physically destroyed or damaged and mine is fine that pretty much all files can be recovered, if you know what to do.FYI I am not in the position to pay epic money to a professional data recovery firm though I would if I could so would greatly appreciate ideas for cheap solutions or ways I can use my own means to retrieve this data.As I said before this means a huge, huge, huge amount to me, and I really, really appreciate your help and advice.
WD password + Mac Data Recovery issues?
After purchasing a WD My Book for my Mac, I transfered 10 GB of data to it, and deleted it from my computer immediately after retard moment . I stupidly decided to test WD's Smartware password protection, and after creating a password entering it correctly twice for some fucked up reason my password doesn't work on multiple computers . I'm wondering if there is a way to bypass this software, and if not, will data recovery recover the folders from my computer in their COMPLETE and original forms? the folder was full of pictures, videos and documents . It's been about 20 mins since I deleted the folder, and I've made sure there has been no disc activity. Sorry for the rushed writing I'm freaking out right now because it is imperative that I retrieve all of these files somehow...
